Does anyone know how good (or bad) the language programs are at Wash U.? Particularly the Japanese/Chinese programs. Also how is the Psychology program as well?

I know the language department is good and something like a third of the juniors do study abroad. I have a friend who's father teaches Japanese there too and is a great teacher from what i hear.

I don't know about Japanese or psychology, but the Chinese program is large and thriving. There were two sections of Chinese II this year, though that will shrink to one section of Chinese III next year. My D's instructor for Chinese II was excellent.

There is a placement exam for the less common foreign languages during orientation when students first get to campus. If that places you, say, in Chinese II, after the successfull completion of that course you get credit for Chinese I.

How about French?

all i know is that my sister did one of her minors in Hindi (language and culture), and offering hindi at a college appears to be a relatively rare occurrence, so it's a positive from that perspective
