D is entering SIS with 4 yrs of HS Spanish. She is uncertain whether her area of focus will be Latin America or Africa. She is having trouble deciding if she should continue with Spanish or begin a new language (probably French). If you are undecided about your area of focus, how do you make a decision about which language to study?

My D entered SIS with 5 years of Spanish and chucked it to take Korean. At first I thought what a waste! But she really did not enjoy Spanish and struggled in that language. I thought that Korean would be even harder for her to learn so I was concerned about her decision to switch. But you know, she surprised me by doing so well in Korean. I guess it is true that you do better if you have a passion for something. So my advice to your D is to let her heart be her guide. The rest will fall into place.
