Language Question (German)

I am entering college this fall. In mid-July, I am attending my college orientation where I will be taking a German Placement/Proficiency Test. If I do well enough on the test, I can place out of the entire foreign language requirement.

I took 4 years of German between 8th and 11th grade, but in 12th grade, I did not take any German. I have not spoke, read, or listened to the language for about a year.

I was thinking about reviewing the language between now and my orientation. Ideally, I would like to do well enough so that I won't have to take any German in college. Should I buy an AP German review book to study, or will the stuff in there be too advanced? I think I still have my old German III and German IV notes in a drawer somewhere too.

Basically, I'm trying to figure out
-how much time I should devote to studying and also
-what I should use to study.

Thanks!

There really aren’t any good AP German study guides out there. I wouldn’t suggest cramming for the test or anything because if you’re rusty, you might as well take a lower-level course. If you feel that class is too easy a week or two into it, then your counselors should let you advance to a higher level through an interview with the professor, i.e. you’d speak German to him/her and he/she would evaluate whether you could or should take the class. So, I wouldn’t stress about studying for it :)
