I've been told that everyone at penn state must take a language..is this true? Is it a requirement for shreyers?

There are no language requirements in the General Ed classes and it’s not a requirement for SCH. There may be some specific programs that require language courses, but there is no overall university requirement.

Grcxx3 is correct. There is no University requirement. However, I think if you are doing a Bachelor of Arts degree (BA), which is typical of many of the liberal arts degree programs, it requires 3rd level of any language (3 classes, 12 credits).

The BA is the big issue. All non-BA degrees at Penn State start off with roughly two years of general education requirements, with the remainder focused on your major. BA degrees remove a year of major courses and replace it with “BA requirements”, another ~30 credit including a 12-credit language requirement. Some majors offer both BA and BS degrees, depending on how much of a specialist or generalist you want to be, and double majoring is easier when both majors are BA degrees.

For the language, you need 12 credits and “level 3” knowledge, which can be attained by completing the courses in college, taking a competency test, or by taking the AP exam in the language and scoring sufficiently high (I think a 5 is needed to fulfill the requirement completely).
