Language Requirement

Does anyone have experience fulfilling their language requirement through Austin Community College online courses? Also, could anyone tell me what Spanish course from ACC online I would have to take in order to meet proficiency? I'd really appreciate it.

I’m not from your area, but I am a foreign language major, so maybe I can give you some advice.

I think taking it online would be a bad idea. The interaction between you and your teacher is vital; it really helps with pronunciation and the like. I’m assuming that, for an online class, you’d have to record yourself speaking and have it sent in somewhere, so you’d be at a disadvantage when dealing with that. (computers can only teach you so much, IMHO. Seeing the way my professor positions her mouth when saying a word is much more useful for me than repeating after the native speakers online)

Taking it at a community college seems okay, though. The ones in my area have really good programs, like having mandatory language labs and the like.

As for which courses to take, after you take your school’s placement test, look up what you are required to take in your catalogue (or online) and then see the community college equivalents.

Good luck with everything!

I second this completely. I can’t imagine gaining much, especially in the initial stages, from an online course in a foreign language. I’m also majoring in a language (Chinese), and I find it hard to imagine gaining any serious proficiency using an online method. That being said, if you don’t care about actually learning and just want to get the credit, then you should go for it.

Thank you. The thing is, I am already a proficient Spanish speaker. I transferred to UT. At my old school I took an advanced grammar and composition course and a Spanish literature course, even though I’m not a Spanish major or minor. I’m just having difficulty getting credit for them.

Online credit sounds like a great option then.
I was told that I would have to test into Chinese classes. They will apply my 4 lang classes toward my requirement, but I have to demonstrate proficiency before I can take any further courses at UT.

If you already know Spanish, then I’d say go ahead with the online class. Now it’s just a matter of getting credits.

How come you couldn’t get credits, though? Did you only take upper-level classes or something? I’ve found that most first year classes can transfer over, but not all intermediate and up classes will to various schools.

In my opinion, a language is a language regardless of where you take it. But I digress. :)

It appears that the only Spanish classes offered online at ACC are Spanish I & II. So that’s very beginner Spanish, which assumes you know no Spanish at all. It sounds like it’d be a waste of your time and money if you already speak Spanish fluently. If you just need to get the credits to fulfill degree requirements, your best bet is the CLEP test.

I recently took one and tested out of four semesters of French, and all it cost me was $115 and about 3 hours of my time. I know UT offers credit for CLEP. I just don’t know what their testing schedule and costs are. At ACC, they offer it Monday through Friday at 2pm, and you just have to make an appointment in advance. You pay $35 when you make the appointment, and $80 on test day.

So if that’s what you’re trying to accomplish, it’d definitely be worth your time to check it out!

Oh, and obviously, before taking the test you should just talk to your advisor to make sure that will fulfill your requirements. I’m pretty sure it will, but wouldn’t want you to waste your time if I’m wrong!

Thanks for the help! I’ll look into taking that exam.

I took Spanish 1 online at ACC with Mr. Altanero and it was horrible. I barely made a B. Just imagine teaching yourself a language out of a book. I highly recommend against it unless its your only dedication.
If you do take it online don’t take Mr. Altanero.
