Language/ study abroad program in Middlebury?

I just realized that the most important thing i'm looking for in my college selection is study abroad/language program!!

I am going to start learning Mandarin as soon as i'm done with this college application crap and hope to become something close to being Mandarin-fluent by the time I graduate from college. And also I really wish to study in China through something like exchange student program.

How are Middlebury Mandarin classes?
Does it have any study abroad program in China?
And if you can, would you please compare its programs with those of other schools?

Thanks A LOT!

You can figure some of these questions out yourself by doing a little research. I’ll get you started.

I never miss a chance to talk about Chinese here!
You learn fast. First-year Chinese is intense, but worth it. I didn’t know a word of Chinese coming in Freshman year and now I’m planning on living in China next year.
The department is AMAZING, and has more professors than similar liberal arts colleges of the same size. There are five full professors, plus a few “visiting lecturers” (one who only teaches language courses and then two younger Chinese women who teach a few classes as well). It’s one of the strongest language departments at a school where that’s really saying something.
For study abroad in China, you can go to Hangzhou or Kunming (where the two Middlebury schools are), as well as Beijing (where you can do the CET program during J-term). I went to Hangzhou, which was incredible. You live on a university campus with a Chinese roommate and attend small classes with other Midd students, including a one-on-one course of your own design. Plus the cost of living is pretty low, so you can enjoy yourself on the weekends
That’s about it… If you have any more specific questions about Chinese here, feel free to pm me.

Klink: just to add to your good post — this year, Midd will have 3 sites, not just Hangzhou and Kunming, but also in Beijing (for beyond the WT with CET). A great selection of cities, depending on your curricular interest and major.

I’m also interested in Languages at Midd, but specifically Japanese. I’ve been to the website, but can anyone give me insight on the Japanese program at Midd?
