Language Testing?

Do you still test if you tranfer university language credit? My full year of language credit came across as “GEN” and I wondered if they did that to make me test.

are you talking about AP credit? my dd did not have but took FL assessment during orientation and tested out of French 1 into an accelerated 2/3 class and got 5 credit hours as if she had taken french 1. She had 3 years of french but had not studied since soph year. was worried as she had guessed on some answers but the class she was in was perfect level…

the math assessment is another story…take it seriously and use a calculator!!!

I had 3 years of Russian in HS plus two semesters (8 cr hrs) of university level Russian this past year. My university work transferred as Russian GEN (12 quarter credits), when I expected it to be Russian 101, and 102 at least…probably should be half of 103 also since 101 + 102 = 10 credits and I did 12.

Normally when you have credit for a full year of language at university level they register you for the next level…so I am confused about what OSU is doing.

I appreciate the tip on the math exam. My mom teaches engineering and she said she couldn’t do the first problem :frowning: …she said the B test looked hard. Definitely NOT looking forward to it…

How hard is the placement test. Son has 4 years of spanish (didn’t take AP test-unfortunately-one of his better subjects) and we were wondering how it “compares” to an AP test and how realistically he might expect getting credit for spanish 101/102/102 (15 hours!) . If he gets credit—can it be used for a humanities GEC credit?

don’t think too hard. dd was worried because she guessed on some that she could partially translate and tested into the same class (102/103) as a friend who had just finished french 4 senior year (when she had only had french 3, and that in soph year). Her accelerated review class was a perfect match for her ability and she got 5 credit hours for testing out of 101.

My French placement was pretty difficult as I guessed on a lot of it, but I still got placed into 103.66 (accelerated 2nd level and 3rd level review). It’s not difficult to get credit for one or two levels even though the test is difficult (if you understand what I’m saying).

How long does it usually take for OSU to post your language credit hours that you tested out of?

caolila, Some of the language programs require you to complete a fluency test (like a verbal interview), which might be why your credits transferred as general credit. I know that Japanese does it, but I’m not sure about Russian.

What is the format of the french placement exam?
like MC? grammar and/or reading?

Its on a computer, and it’s grammar and reading. So pretty much you get prompts and you answer questions about whats going on, and then there are some questions about what the correct conjugations are and what word goes in the blank. It’s all multiple choice.

I emailed the department of Slavic Languages a couple weeks ago to ask about my transfer credit in Russian, and I never received a reply.

Try this link:

It sounds like you might need to speak with a transfer credit coordinator in the Registrar’s Office if you have questions about how your classes will transfer.

if credit was given at an accreddited post secondary institution, perhaps give transfer.org a try. it’ll tell u what classes transfer as what to OSU from whatever school u choose. doesn’t have all schools, but should suffice for your purposes.

otherwise, send in your transcripts, and OSU will determine what it’ll get u out of.

The transfer dept gave me 12 units of credit called “Russian GEN”. I am going to have to talk to Slavic lang dept directly I guess.
