One of my passions and main EC's is language. I learned russian and english growing up and am fluent in both of those, and in school I will take AP spanish junior year and AP french senior year. I volunteer at a russian association, not too often but whenever they need me, and for spanish I take a trip to an orphanage in mexico every summer and started a charity to raise money for them. Is this all good? I just have a true passion for languages and I wonder if colleges will see that and see how much work I've put into all of them. How much would colleges value this?
Thank you!

I’m not sure how much colleges value this but it would make a great essay! Do you like language in the context of how it is the main way of communication and how it had evolved or is it how the cultures of all of the places that the languages you know are different that interests you? You could right about which one you like and relate things to what you’ve done involving languages.

Same here! I love languages (mostly FRENCH and SPANISH). I’ve studied abroad for 2 months during the summer and went to school. I’m wondering what kind of organizations I can start to fundraise or something.

ReachForDreams: I like both aspects! I love all the different cultures, for example if there were a job that involved just traveling a learning about cultures, Sign me up right now! Ha. But I also love the idea that I can communicate with people from all different parts of the world. And thanks for the essay idea! I still have a year before I’ll be filling out applications though but I’ll keep that in mind.

Damon1570: Spanish and French are probably my favorites as well! When you say starting organizations to fund raise, what would you be fundraising for? I could give you some ideas if you gave some more details.

I think colleges like to see evident passions in high school students, but that’s just my opinion. I love languages too, and I’ll probably take more years of Japanese and some courses in either Russian or German. I had an intro to Russian at a 3 week summer Governor’s School program last year, and it was so drastically different from anything I’ve ever learned.

I’ve taken 2 years of Latin, 3 of Japanese, and 2 of Chinese, so Russian was a huge slap in the face. =P

Personally, I’d like to learn fluently at least one of each of the major groups, but I’ll stick with the ones I like the most. Right now that’s Japanese, Russian and German. Chinese isn’t my thing, I’ve learned. xD

EDIT Forgot to mention I’ve started my own Japanese Club and I’m planning on doing Japanese tutoring next year. ^-^ I would have done it this year, but I didn’t feel I’d be an adequate tutor until I finished the highest available level of the language in my school.

Well, at least the colleges will see I have leadership skills, right? xD
