Languages at GW

i was accepted under ED1 and i'm going to study international affairs @ elliott.

does anyone know if it is possible to take two languages at gw? or do people never really do this?

i have been taking german for years and don't want to stop but i also want to start arabic.
any ideas?

I talked to an admissions rep about this a few months ago and he said that it was completely possible. It’s likely that all of your coursework would be either the languages or for your major, though; it wouldn’t leave much room for electives.

im currently in Elliott and am taking Arabic. I initially planned on taking Spanish and Arabic, considering I’ve take Spanish throughout high school…however, the curriculum in the ESIA is pretty jam packed, and unless u plan on receiving a ton of college credit thru APs and etc. it would be quite difficult, or it was atleast for me…especially considering languages meet 4 times a day and just take too much time of your schedule…is it possible, yea…but very difficult

To PatM

My “S” is in a similar place as you - incoming Freshman, EISA, AP Spanish as senior. He also wants to continue Spanish and start French.

My question, if not too personal is, did you take AP Spanish and where did you place in the Spanish course sequence. This might help him decide similar to you.

Thanks.

I received a 4 on AP Spanish…and here at GW, after the placement test, I was placed into Spanish 9, however like I said, I opted to go with Arabic only

Hey Pat. Thanks for all the useful info. Just like bbbreathe, I would like to take two languages. Is Arabic hard @ Elliott? I am considering to take it. Also, if one has gotten a 5 on the AP Spanish exam, what’s the procedure @ GW for that? Would I still need to take a placement test? If not, which level would I start with?

Hi,
Yes it is possible to take two languages at GW, certainly. I take Spanish and Chinese. I scored a 5 on AP Spanish and after not taking it my freshman year went straight into a Spanish literature class (SPAN 30W). I did not need to take a placement test; on the first day of class we wrote a short composition to ensure that our placement was appropriate and if so that was the end of it.
On another note if anyone is interested, the Chinese department at GW is superb and I highly recommend it…especially to Elliot students! Good luck.

gonefishing: Superb information!!! Thank you so much. I am looking forward to all that you described. Chinese is third on my list; if I can get done with Spanish fast enough, I plan to move on to Chinese. :)

After taking Spanish for 5 years, I hoestly feel that Arabic is actually an easier way to learn. It is a different way of learning but to me I found it very easy to pick up. And to go with with what “gonefishing” said, the entire language department is very good here at GW

Awesome  Thank you Pat. Now I know I will be in my element and will enjoy it. Yay for good foreign language departments!!
