Languages at ND in general

ihaterunning, you won't regret it. A bunch of my Italian class friends took Spanish and transitioned quite smoothly (creating a fun little combination that one of them refers to as "Spitanglish"). The department does all sorts of stuff like cooking classes (I got to make risotto), movie showings and opera trips, all of which are free or very cheap. I can only speak from my experience, but I see cool posters up for a lot of the different departments.

HoundDad, even though the prof spoke mostly Arabic, was your daughter able to pick up on it somewhat easily, or did she spend a whole lot of time studying it?
I understand that any language is going to take work to learn, but was it really strenuous, or just what is normally expected when learning languages?

ddjones--yes it is amazingly true!!! although Mendoza "recommends and encourages courses in foreign language" it is by no means a requirement!! hooray! i took the SAT IIs for spanish anyways to try to get some elective credit... a 450 gets you 3 HOURS!!! WOW! and a 460 and above will all get you 6 hours!! crazy... i don't even know if i pulled off a 450 though; i suck at spanish and that SAT II was ridiculously hard

SCSquidSnaps,

My D said that it wasn't particularly strenuous. Nightly assignments and memorization before a quiz or test, but in general, didn't spend a lot of time studying. She didn't feel it was one of her more stressful classes.

As for the prof speaking Arabic, everyone is in the same boat starting out, and he realizes that. Also, the first part of the first semester focuses mainly on learning the alphabet, which takes some getting used to.

As a disclaimer, I will say that languages is something D has a "thing" for.

Hope this helps

Yes, thank you. I'm currently a high school senior, but I wanted to take Arabic in college, so its good to know that its not really stressful. Thanks for the information!

Anyone know how about how the classes are for Chinese majors at ND? Is it a popular major?
