so i love languages, and i'm thinking of studying hindi as my south asian language. does anyone anything other than what the catalog says about hindi? or how's the arabic program?

I don't know about the department, but there a good number of people here who speak Hindi if you want to practice with them!

yeah. i also want to study hindi.

i've talked with a couple of americans (aged 40-60) all of whom said that Chicago has one of the best South Asian departments. actually, as i've done some research, very few unis offer such courses, let alone majors!

so, i'd say, you need not to worry about this hindi. but it would be great if someone who's actually there says sth on the matter.

Small world, I want to study Hindi too. All I know is that they have a study abroad course in Pune, India and Hindi is included (it also satisfies a core requirement). It sounds so amazing.

Great latin program for what it's worth

hmm, i'm sooo tired of latin right now. i'm in my 4th year, and there are only so many things you can translate before you want to SPEAK!

hahahah. why are we comparing hindi with latin at all?
if it was sanskrit, ok, but it isn't

The school has an excellent Hindi program and offers more South Asian language choices - 10 - than any school in the country. The American Institute of Indian Language Studies is even headquartered at the University.

I know a lot of people in various Indian language courses, mainly Urdu and Hindi. Funny thing is most of them are white (as are most of the Indian langauge teachers, including the Hindi professor).

I am applying to US so that i could study sanskrit in a respectable college - There's none in India.
