I have a German 5 and taking AP Spanish this year, my concern is that they would only accept one foreign language credit. Also, if I continue to study these languages, will I still receive credit for them AND be placed in advanced courses or would it only bring me the benefits of skipping intro classes.

I am pretty sure that you will receive units of credit for doing well on AP exams for language, and you will also be able to start in a more advanced course. However, I am most of the people I know have found that AP credits do no good; they can count towards graduation (but not a major), and most students will end up taking enough units because of their major/GERs/personal interest so that the AP credits don't end up making a difference anyways.

I'm going to attempt to clarify because I don't know how much sense that made. You need 180 units to graduate. http://registrar/students/academics/adv_place.htm You can bring in up to 45 units from AP credit. Let's say you choose a major that is about 90 units. You also have to complete GERs (General Education Requirements) http://www.stanford.edu/dept/registrar/bulletin/bulletin06-07/pdf/DegreePrograms.pdf which could take up, say, 60 units (I'm just picking a random number). With your major and the GERs, you have completed 150 units, and you still need 30 more to graduate (this could come from extra classes, things you thought were fun, activity classes, etc.). The AP units could count towards this extra 30 hypothetical units. The AP units CANNOT count towards your 90-unit major in almost all cases (I can't think of a case in which AP credit does count). So, you could graduate by doing the major and GERs for a total of 150 units and then bring in 30 units of AP credit. However, most people don't lack those 30 units; they end up taking more than 180 units at Stanford anyways.

Did that help?
