Hey guys, so on the common app it asks what languages do you know. Do they only want languages you are fluent with or can you put languages that you've been taking at school. I've gone through 4 years of Spanish and feel pretty confident in my ability to use it but definitely not enough to say I'm fluent in it. Should I still put that I know the language or no?

Think of it like this…

You’ve been kidnapped and drugged. You wake up and find yourself in a mysterious land albeit beautiful with exotic features beyond your imagination. You look for signs and you find your self near the Portuguese border of Spain. You need to make your way back to Barcelona (pretend the only embassy of your home nation is in the city) using any resources possible. Can you make the trip? If you can then go ahead and put that you know the language. If not, just forget about.

Sorry for that. I had this issue with French. I know enough to get around but the story I described for you would not be possible for me to complete. I only put English

You can put every language you’ve earned at school and are fluent in. For instance, I took four years of Spanish and can read/write Spanish pretty well so I checked that box. I wasn’t confident with my speaking/comprehension ability so I left that unchecked.
