So from what ive read on cc and different forums, apparently lanyards are a big freshman DONT. Im heading to UMDCP in two weeks and was just wondering if I should still get a lanyard or not. Im a guy that wears basketball shorts a lot so I have no place to put my room key and mailbox key, besides my wallet. Im afraid that if I put my room key in my wallet that it will fall out. So should i get a lanyard anyways even though you will easily be able to point my out as a freshman.

I use a lanyard for my key and ID; I don’t wear it around my neck, I keep it in my pocket.

Don’t listen to what anyone says. People are full of crap. I’m a grad student and even my grad school friends use them.

No one cares if you’re a “freshman”. This isn’t high school.

I’ll be honest, lanyards are my guilty obsession for whatever reason and I’m really excited you said you’re going to UMDCP because that’s my top school and I’m hoping to attend there next fall, but anyway! I don’t give a crap about what others think with lanyards–I love mine and will continue to use it as a freshman because its a great way to represent your school spirit (cheesy, I know, but like I said, I personally don’t care). Plus my sister’s a senior at UND and she still uses a lanyard, and I doubt she’s ever gotten crap for it. I’d say use it!

It doesn’t matter. Use whatever you want. No one’s going to care, and if they do, what difference does it make to you?

Will you have a car on campus? You could easily carry a keychain in your pocket.

no i wont have my car on campus so all i would really be carrying on it is my room key and mailbox key

Lots of wallets have zippered sections if you want to get a new one and not have to wear a lanyard.

I have carried a lanyard since I was a senior in high school. Not sure where you heard that lanyards are a major don’t. It is the most convenient way to carry around my keys.

Why don’t you just get basketball shorts that have pockets, so you can keep the lanyard (with keys attached) in your pocket?

There are times when wearing a lanyard would be appropriate, such as for a job where it’s required, when exercising, or when doing laundry. Otherwise, having a lanyard in your pocket is much more acceptable. Deciding to have the lanyard hang out of ones pocket is an individual decision. Some people will also only hang their lanyard out of one side of their pants/shorts because they consider the choice of side symbolic in much the same way that girls wear Hawaiian flowers on different sides of their head depending on their relationship status.

Note too that you can have a lanyard advertising something other than your school or a professional sports team. I got my current lanyard from an event hosted by a company related to an extracurricular activity of mine. If Newegg comes to your campus, they often give away lanyards which say “take it from a geek.”

I go to UMD and I along with a lot of my friends have lanyards that we keep in our pockets for keys and in a lot of cases the I.D. card in a holder from the book store. The football games also have a ritual where you shake your keys on third down and I would guess most people have lanyards based on what I’ve seen from this. I haven’t seen anyone where them around their necks though and I keep it in my pocket or my bag.

I personally use the same lanyard that I used throughout high school for my keys, and just put it in my pocket. The exception to that is if I’m exercising or doing laundry, in which case I wear it around my neck. If you do choose to wear it around your neck in general though, no one really cares. And if someone cares enough about that to think negatively of you for it, they’re honestly not worth your time.

Landyards are way too convenient not to have. I had it during my freshman year with my ID and room key! Wearing it around my neck was a sure way to not lose them.

Now I juse use it for my car keys. But I don’t care what anyone says – lanyards are COOL and keep me from losing my stuff.

Uhm? The whole freshman lanyard thing is wearing it around your neck or having it handing out of your pocket, I believe.

They are very convenient. Any key I own is kept on a lanyard.

Oh, and very year my school gives out free lanyards to freshman. See if you can get one for free before buying…

Yea I guess the freshman thing is just wearing it around ur neck. I guess I’ll get a umd lanyard. Thanks for all the responses guys

Who cares? If you want to wear one, then wear one. If you don’t want to wear one, then don’t. Why should you be concerned about what other people think of you?

Is it a bad thing to be a college freshman or something? College isn’t as cliquey as high school is. People aren’t going to care that you’re wearing a lanyard. I personally wouldn’t wear one, but I usually have jeans or cargo shorts on. During the day, I typically keep my keys in my backpack though.

If you don’t have pockets for your keys, where do you carry your wallet? I hope you’re not walking around with it in your hand - that’s just asking for it to get swiped.

i dont care about being judged or anything i was just asking a question. and usually most of my pockets r really baggy so a lanyard with one key is really easy to lose

I have a serious problem where I lose everything, so I NEED a lanyard. I have a medium sized clip on it so that I can clip it to my pants or my bag. If I don’t do this, I will get locked out of my room probably every week.

I honestly do not care what people say, but I hate wearing lanyards around my neck. I’ll clip it on the nearest available space, let it be my belt loop or my bag.
