I'm a Stanford c/o '09, and I want to buy a new lap top for when next year. Does anyone have suggestions on good lap tops? Thanks!!

Does Stanford give educational discounts of any sort for laptops?

apple powerbook!

dell and apple are discounted for stanford students

but does anyone reccomend a particular laptop as being really stellar?

What will you need your laptop for? Are you going to be taking a lot of computer science classes and math classes, or will you just need it for typing up homework and browsing the Internet? Is price a big factor?

(Sorry to get in the way-- but I'm looking for a laptop too-- I'll be taking a lot of science and math-type classes. Also for Internet. Equal or less than $1700)

i'm looking for a laptop to do all my hw on - and hopefully i'm taking minimal computer science/ math classes - price is not a factor. i have a crappy dell inspiron now which freezes and spazzes out all the time and i just can't stand it. should i get another dell, or maybe a sony viao? is there a particular version anyone would reccomend? thank you soo much!!

Sony is very stable and has a high quality. However, its price is inflated also. IF you want to get a Dell, make sure it's not a crappy one. Get one of the higher-end Inspirons.

I would get the apple. It isn't attacked by as many things as a pc laptop.
And dell's aren't exactly the best pc out there.
go for the apple

Yeah, I would suggest an Apple for anyone who isn't taking a lot of computer science courses. The only reason I make that exception is that if you are, you should probably ask somebody with your major whether they found having an Apple or a PC better for their needs.

Actually for the most part CS majors use the computers in Sweet Hall... neither regular PCs or Macs can hold up with everything they need.

I have an Acer which was served me well. You may want to try one of these notebook forums and ask for suggestions...these people eat, drink, and breath laptops.

For Macs:

i do hear great things about apples, but i'm such a diehard pc fan - even though i have the crappiest dell that gets messed up every day... is it easy to switch from pc to apple??

oh yes. trust us mac people, we'll help you through it :D

:-D and slowly Steve Jobs takes over the world! Muahahahaha.

But seriously, macs are 100% user friendly, and they practically never get viruses.

I read on some post that it was like 50/50 for Macs and PCs at Stanford. Originally, I figured I should get a PC because they probably wouldn't have things setup easily for macs (like networking would be a pain if you were the only Mac user and they didn't give instructions). But seeing as there are a lot of Mac users, there are only a few factors. If you play a lot of computer games, you'd probably go with the PC. Also, if price is a big issue, you're more likely to find a great deal on a PC than a Mac, just because there are so many more producers.

bonafide20, that website is great, i've found so much there - thanks!

dude you gotta go with the apple powerbook g4, preferably 15 inch screen, or if you have money, the 17inch screen. i mean, seriously, nothing beats the powerbook except for maybe maybe a toshiba tablet pc, but those aren't perfect and stable yet.

i use a fujitsu, very VERY reliable =).
