Anybody have one that they particularly like or dislike?

I have an EMS short circuit. I like it.

Some people think that laptop bags are bad because they draw attention to the fact that you have a laptop (not an issue at my school, but something to consider).

Make sure you get a chance to actually look at it before you buy, if possible.

I have this one: http://www.target.com/gp/detail.html/ref=br_1_16/602-0785634-2879822?%5Fencoding=UTF8&frombrowse=1&asin=B0002XR9TA

I like it, and it's cute. There is also a pretty wide selection of other styles on the target site.

You could always go with northface, if you want the laptop/backpack. I know alot of people who are very happy with them.

My laptop backpack looks exactly like a regular backpack. The make is Osprey. Other excellent backpacks to buy for laptops that look like regular backpacks include Oakley, Deuter, and Eagle Rock. However my preference is still Osprey.

I recently bought an Ogio backpack. Everyone I've talked to that had them swear by them, but they do cost a little bit. Mine is the Metro model and it has a laptop pocket near the back and one inside plus lots of very useful pockets and organization things inside. Their website is www.ogio.com.

Does anyone have recommendations for a good one (preferrably a messenger, but otherwise is fine) that is well cushioned, easy on the back/shoulders, and has two main compartments?

check out the timbuk2 laptop bags for messenger style (they have options). Personally I dont think the laptop bags are as nice or as versatile as the normal messenger bags (which you can customize in every way).

The gap sells a small bag that meets your description but I dont know how it is on the shoulders (I dont carry mine for long when I use it). They are near end of life so they are on sale everywhere and might be gone.

My favorite suggestion is to use a laptop sleeve. A padded bag the size of your laptop with a handle and maybe a small pocket or two. You can stick that in ANY big you want (like say...a medium Timbuk2 bag with a center divider to meet your requirements) or just carry the sleeve when all you want is hte laptop. Timbuk2 also makes a sleeve but Booq has nicer sleeves for the same price (the vyper series).

Is the Vyper very well padded inside?

the vyper is pretty much made out of padding until you get to the outside where it is more of a semi-rigid shell for even more protection.

As an alternative to a backpack made specifically for a laptop I just picked up a vertical laptop case at an L.L. Bean Outlet for about $6. I plan to put it in one compartment of a backpack I already have, it will allow me to continue to use the bag I already have which I really like, seen here, http://www.llbean.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/CategoryDisplay?storeId=1&catalogId=1&langId=-1&categoryId=38032&from=GM&noDept=1&guideId=6691&moduleId=6694&parentCategory=6694&feat=230406, and it will allow me to protect my laptop. Seems like a pretty ideal situation to me.

Ottothecow, or others,
The Vyper sleeve I ordered came today and I am a little disappointed. Maybe I just was expecting foam padding, but this sleeve doesn't seem to have any/much padding. The exterior is semi-rigid however, just as advertised. Do you have experience with this product? Will the semi-rigid exterior make up for the lack of soft padding? Thanks...

What I did was get a notebook sleeve, and I bought a laptop which had a convenient little cloth compartment inside the main compartment which my laptop fits into perfectly. It's really nice, because I get the look of a normal backpack while my laptop is secure. I got it at Kohls.

It was a Champion, by the way

Well, I've been overruled about the Vyper. The men in my house think it's cool and perfect protection for use in a backpack. Actually, I think it is waterproof or water-resistant, too. I guess I worry too much!
