laptop computers protection

Does anybody have a lock for their laptops and how it works in the dorm rooms? I've read a police reports from Cornell and there are a lot of reports for the stolen computers

People who get their laptop stolen usually had a lapse of common sense during the time of theft.

I've heard of people who really needed to goto the bathroom really bad in a pulbic area, left their computer, went to do their business, and the computer was gone.

Kensington lock should be fine, or one from targus is fine as well. The basic locks are tough and can fix your laptop to pretty much any stationary object (your desk, bed, whatever). If you keep your laptop in your room, hiding it out of sight AND locking it will deter almost everyone (except for maybe one guy who hates you with a passion and will steal your laptop specifically).

There are only a few ways a basic lock can be broken:

-- cut it with a heavy duty bolt cutter (who carries these around though? And it still doesn't solve the problem of getting the lock OUT of the lock port, so the thief will still have trouble selling it)

-- guess the combination (have fun doing this, too many possiblities)

-- steal the stationary object along with the computer (if people are desperate enough to carry a big stationary object AND your computer at the same time... they deserve to have it... but it still doesn't solve the problem of getting the lock out of the port)

-- yanking the laptop out of the lock port (this DOES free up the laptop, but it will be almost impossible to sell simply because of the fact that the lock port on the computer will be broken, indicating that it was stolen)

EDIT: if you're worried about the heavy duty bolt cutters, you can always get a heavy duty armor-grade lock cord if you want for some more cash... you're gonna need a chainsaw or a katana to cut through one of those things

you don't need to worry about thefts. locking your door when you're out of the room or locking your computer to your desk will prevent theft in 99% of situations where someone would snatch it from your room. If you're going to be in the library all day and will get up for coffee, snacks, lunch, bathroom, sanity-maintaining time, it's a good idea to get a $30-40 cable or combo lock from the cornell store just to be safe. Laptop thefts at cornell are not elaborately planned "Gone in 60 Seconds heists," but rather moments of poor ethics when someone says "ooh, a 'free' computer, i'll take it..."

you could try to be in public places like the library with a friend or two. you know, watch each other's stuff.

Attach a few hundred pounds of TNT to the laptop.

If you can't have it, no one will.

yeah, and people leave stuff around all over the place, it gets stolen because people are stupid enough to leave it out in the open. At the gym people leave ipods, wallets, and keys all over the place and they just "happen" to get stolen. just keep everything safe and not out in the open.

You should also get Computrace Lojack for Laptops.

If they manage to steal it (assuming you locked it up), with IP address, they will be found.

You also get the locks with alarms on them. Some should notice when your laptop's lock's alarm goes wild!

i was also afraid of my laptop getting stolen but just like the others said, just lock your doors when you leave the laptop in your room and if you go to library you can just rent one if you're paranoid about someone taking your own
