Laptop desktop question

My son is trying to decide if he will bring both his desktop and laptop, or laptop only. I’m hoping a few current students will chime in about this.

I suggest only bringing ONE, not both. There just isn't enough time with the quarter schedule to deal with having two computers. I find that having a laptop is much more handy, because I am able to take notes in class, or follow slides and work on campus or with other students in various places in Davis. With a desktop, I cannot do any of that.

I know a few people who do have desktop computers, (but the vast majority has laptops) and they are surviving just fine.

laptops are much more convenient.

is there free internet @ davis or colleges in general

internet on campus is free with registered student status, in the dorms it is free too

but in your apartments off campus...it may not be...

but is it like wi-fi or cable dsl. another question how does wifi work? i feel like this is the wrong place to post my technological questions, but oh welll.

in the dorms it is entirely by ethernet cord.

on campus it is wi-fi but only in selected areas. anywhere there is a nearby computer lab (Hunt, Olson, etc), the library, the quad, etc...search wi-fi on daviswiki.org to get more info..

an older laptop will need one of those internet card things (I think), I have a Mac so mine is already built in...I don't really know how it all works for PC's anymore as I am not updated on the latest technology for that platform and then you will need to register your computer, which you can do off campus.. and then just open your web browser and sign in, and then you're connected.

Campus has WiFi in many locations. You have to log in with your UCD username/PW after connecting to the hotspot.

The dorms have T3 internet, I believe. I remember getting a good 25 Mbps download on speed tests.
