I wanted a laptop/desktop for gaming, but I've been thinking about note taking in class and having to write papers and about the computer clusters never having room and stuff. Is a long battery life necessary to do that? do you recharge after class if you have time? Or do you only use it for specific classes?

Go with laptop. Since you won't be taking many science classes, the laptop will be FAR more helpful for text-heavy lectures. You should use good ol' pen(cil) and paper for math classes.

You can always find spaces with power outlets, so battery life shouldn't be a major worry. And lectures don't go beyond 1.5 hours usually.

In big lecture halls, you have to get the seats that have power outlets that allow you to be out of the way. If you do get into Haas, most of their classrooms have power outlets right on the tables.

I have a couple more questions if you guys don't mind.

Do many people have televisions in their dorm? What sizes?

Berkeley says you can't bring refrigerators, but some people say they still do?
Do you sneak it in, or do they really not care, and do people ever get caught? If so, can you give me a rough percentage?

You can bring a fridge. I think you're only supposed to have one in a double and two in a triple. Having one takes up enough room already though.

Berkeley can't ban you from bringing a fridge.

You can rent from Micro 101. It's not too bad. Although it is $100 per person in a double, 67ish per person in a triple, it is extremely convenient if you're from socal and don't want to drive a fridge up or buy one up here during move-in, esp. with gas prices these days, fridges are pretty heavy and you want to save the room in the car for your clothing and other stuff.

Most people have fridges in their room. Fewer have freezers. The Micro 101 rent a fridge have freezers.

I think maybe 2-3 people per floor max have tvs in their rooms. Usually something like 21" or so.

You're officially supposed to get refrigerators from Micro 101, but a lot of people get their own and people don't seem to really care (it's better this way; you could BUY a refrigerator for the cost that Micro 101 charges you to RENT one).

Something around 19-21" is ideal for a dorm TV. You could go bigger if you have the $$$, want to lug the thing around, and can spare the space.

1) What are the hot deals on laptops right now? I want it to be reliable (i.e. lasts longer than a year, like my last one). Preferably it won't be too expensive. And is a good gaming platform.

2) I just want to buy my own mini-fridge, mainly for milk, beer and a quick snack should I miss lunch/dinner, for Bowles quad. Would that be OK?

3) I hope my room-mates don't get a TV, or at least won't watch it much, I find it impossible to work with the TV on.

1) Apple has an offer for buying a macbook with an option of a free ipod touch. I don't think apples are good for gaming?

2) I would work out the fridge details with my roommates before bringing one. That way you guys can decide on size, how many you need, etc.

3) You have to work out the tv thing with roommates also. Some tvs have a headphones capacity so one can watch tv while the other can concentrate. Unless you can't concentrate with having the screen on. Then that's another problem.

bartleby - And it's a good thing they don't really do room inspections. So, the only time you'll have to hide stuff is when the RA comes a knocking on your door for noise complaints or something. Heck, people on our floor casually left their bong & weed out on their desks, and you could smell the weed from several feet away from their door when it was closed, and they never had to worry about hiding their stuff. I guess part of it depends on how lenient your RA is, though.

After doing some research I think this is one of the best laptops on hand, check it out. Relatively cheap, reliable and by all accounts a great entertainment platform.
