Laptop: does NYU have discounts and recommendation?

Should I be aware of any special requirements at NYU? Does NYU provide access to any special discounts? Apple or Windows most popular at NYU?

The college bookstore has a computer store. You can do deferred payments over 2 years and get a great computer. The software has an educational discount. Go to nyu.edu and under the quick links go to bookstore and there is a link to the computer store. My D got a great Mac laptop with software. Macs are not cheap no matter where you get them but are pretty trouble-free. The one time in the past 2 years that she had a problem she was able to get it fixed free and quickly.

Macs are prevalent.

The bookstore is not the cheapest option to buy a computer so I would stray away from it. I think the main perk it has is that you don’t pay tax if I remember correctly. You can find sales online from time to time on MBP/MBA’s and Windows computers go on sale every day.

Macbook’s my favorite!

I haven’t been to NYU but I’ve visited the computer store site.
The price is the same as the APPLE EDUCATION PRICE on Apple’s official site, about 100 USD cheaper than that in retail stores.

Notably, you can also check the computer store online to view the recommended Operating System and software according to the school and major you take. You won’t be happy if you bought a Mac while most of your professors recommended Windows.

Don’t buy from the NYU store unless you want to defer your payment! The cost is pretty much the same as the Apple Store when you use Apple’s education discount.

ALSO, Apple always has a free giveaway every year in the summer for when you buy a MacBook/iMac. Last year it was a free 100 dollar gift card, previous years it was a free iPod touch. So I would wait for this deal and buy from the Apple Store.

Hi,is it true that, as #3 said, we don’t pay tax to NYU computer store?
If so, I think the New York State tax is also a factor…

Also, do you recommend buying one giant iMac while in NYU?
I’m not planning to take it back to my home in China, since I think 4-year almost equals an iMac’s life.
How do you do the disposal or second-hand deal of computers in NYC?

I’m not sure about the taxes but you can easily just go on the NYU store, add a MacBook to your cart, and then see if they charge tax.

As for iMac vs. Macbook, it all depends on you. I know that Stern requires a LAPTOP so you’d have to get a MacBook. Honestly, I have an iMac now and although I love it, I don’t think I’d use it in college. You want to be able to take your laptop to classes, the library, coffee shops, and all the other hundreds of places in NYC. An iMac can only stay in your dorm. Go with the MacBook.

Our daughter had a MacBook and liked it fine, but likes her new Mac Air even more, being so much lighter. She got the external DVD but never used it, with everything WiFi these days.

I actually got a Macbook Pro…
I’m just wondering if the combination of iMac indoors and iPad outdoors is better : )

BTW
Do you guys use Router for Wi-Fi?
