<p>You are unlikely to need a high end computer for any CS courses with programming.</p>
<p>If you want to do programming assignments on your own computer without being networked to the campus computers, use an OS and other programming tools that is the same or similar to the OS and programming tools used in the campus computers.</p>
<p>Beyond that, consider the usual criteria like price, size, weight, durability, ergonomics, etc…</p>
