What operating system would be best for computer science majors?

Some will say windows because its the most used OS.

Some will say linux because its the most open OS.

Some will tell you to buy a mac since its the only computer you can run all three major operating systems on.

I would say that the best bet is a Windows/Linux dual boot or a Mac/Windows/Linux tri boot. Its not very difficult to set up and its very handy to be compatible with literally everything.

At some point you will need linux, so keep that in mind.

you don’t need a mac to be able to run “all three major operating systems”

there is software to do this for every operating system, but unlike on a mac, doing it on windows or linux is free. for example, in ubuntu, you can actually run windows on top of ubuntu. you can spawn windows programs and interact with them on the ubuntu desktop, meaning you can have the console open next to a game of minesweeper if you felt so compelled. the program is called VirtualBox, and it works for macs, windows, and other versions of linux too.

plus, dual booting is easy as pie. if you don’t know how, but you know how a computer works (hopefully since you’re going into CS), you will learn after 5-10 minutes on google.

You can install Ubuntu on Windows without paritioning. It’s called Wubi. If you get a Mac, I suggest you get Parallels or VMware so you can run window applications on OS X.
