I was just accepted EA to the class of 2018 and I am planning on studying mechanical engineering. Can any current students recommend a laptop that would be good for my intended major? I really like the 15" Macbook Pro with retina but I have heard that using a mac for engineering can be difficult because of the numerous windows-specific programs that are used.

Also, do a lot of engineering students at ND use macs, or mostly PC? What seems to be the majority?

Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

Personally, I would go with a PC, but I’m probably biased because I have a PC. You are correct that Macs can be a little difficult with engineering. I think most of the programs we use will run on Macs, but all of the software issues we’ve had in the classes I’ve taken so far were only issues for Mac users. PCs tend to run the programs with less issues.

Some engineering students have Macs, but I’d say the majority of the engineers I know use PCs. I don’t know if this is necessarily representative of all engineers, though; that’s just the breakdown of the other engineers I know.

The bottom line is that you’ll be fine with either. The only kind of laptop that would be a real problem would be one that is very old and very slow.

My engineer friends all have PCs. Just throwing that out there. I am not in engineering so I don’t know if there are requirements of any kind.

Just as general information, you can always use OS X’s Bootcamp and use Mac OS, Windows, or any Linux distro on a Mac.
