Laptop for sis

So, since my sister isn't very techy and she needs a laptop for college, I am one again trolling the internet for deals on laptops.

When I needed a laptop for college I got the lenovo t400 and I am in general very happy with it, however not so happy that I am going to tell my sister to get the same one without exploring different options. My biggest problem is the t400's battery life, I got the 4-cell battery because anything bigger sticks out of the computer's body which is unwieldy and ugly. Frankly, this battery doesn't allow me to do much away from my power cord, even just word processing or internet usage gives me an absolute max of 3 hr battery life, if I want to do some matlab or watch a video its a lot worse usually.

So basically does anyone know of a laptop that is roughly the same size (14.1 in, 3-5 lb) with good quality/design (I've not had any problems with my laptop hardware wise, other than the aforementioned battery gripe) and that is reasonably priced?

Honestly I'm leaning towards telling my parents to get her a mac because they have great battery life and are very portable, shes not going into any technical major so compatibility won't be an issue. I'm hesitant to do this though because in my experience mac's are very expensive and I think that I can probably find something just as good for less money...

Any help appreciated, so far I've come across a couple of lenovo's but I am hesitant because of the batteries.

The new HP Pavilion dm4 has received generally positive reviews so far… you should look into that. It’s fairly inexpensive too.

MacBook pro 13 inch is 1100 with education discount. It also comes with a free printer an iPod touch. So basically I paid 1130 dollars plus tax for an iPod, a MacBook pro, and a printer/scanner/copier. The extra 30 comes from paying extra for the fancier printer
