Can anyone tell me if you use a laptop lock or is there a place in the dorm where you can lock up your laptop, extra cash, prescriptions, etc.? Do any of the desk drawers lock? I saw another forum that discussed taking a personal safe. Is that necessary?

I don’t know if all dorms have this bus one hall in south has the ability to put a lock on one of your dresser drawers. Thus, it’s big enough probably to fit a laptop if needed, and definitely any other small valuables. So I guess you could just email residence life to check and see if all dorms are like this.

All dorm rooms have one drawer that can lock, but you have to bring the padlock, and yes, you want to have the ability to secure your valuables there. I don’t think the drawer is big enough to hold every laptop, and besides, you ought to have a cable lock for your laptop when you take it to the library, etc. They sell cable-style locks most everywhere, including the PSU computer stores.

Thanks. Just trying to get a list of things that would be helpful/necessary.

Anyone can also buy a Lojak program for your laptop. It tracks it down if it is stolen, like a stolen car. It works - I know someone who was caught that way.

Remember that much more damage is done by coffee or by dropping than by theft or viruses. Make sure you have one or two regular backups on a portable hard drive or similar method, and don’t carry the hard drive around in the same bag.

Some people used megaupload for their backup and once that company was raided by the feds, they couldn’t access the files.
