Laptop: Mac v PC

We were saying the same thing, but your point could’ve been misinterpreted in such a way that my point would be applicable. There, happy?

This is incorrect. The great majority of EECS/CS majors (should) prefer a PC because of the programs that are available (GUI editors [jcreator, and the like], LabView, etc.). The only reason why you may have a Mac is because it’s Unix-based, so you don’t have to spend 10 seconds on a PC to download Putty and Xming and connect to the Berkeley servers.

So, again: if you’re extraordinarily stubborn and cannot follow instructions given to you for one or two things throughout the 4-year span of your laptop totalling about 10 minutes, and don’t want programs that will make your coding projects a couple thousand times more organized, then you can go for a Mac. Otherwise, go for a PC. …

I spend my days in Soda hall, and the fact of the matter is, Macs are considered very good investments.

EDIT: Although any and all computer systems are susceptible to viruses and malware, there are certain technical reasons why Unix based systems are superior in terms of security. Also, GUI editors and stuff like that are certainly available on a Mac and if you really had to use something that ONLY ran on windows, you CAN dual boot.

[Gone in 2 minutes: Mac gets hacked first in contest | Mobilize - InfoWorld](http://www.infoworld.com/d/mobilize/gone-in-2-minutes-mac-gets-hacked-first-in-contest-676)

The only reason there aren’t a million viruses for Apple is because more people use Windows. As shown with the recent iLife virus.

The hack is safari specific and is pretty well known.

I’d like to see proof to that, please.

acer timeline ftw.

If you know what you’re doing, you’re not going to have security issues on either Mac or PC. Then it comes down to user preference for the OS and your budget. Period.

Let me just leave it at this-

some of the best/most knowledgable eecs/cs majors AND professors I know use Macbooks. If you’re just paying for OOOOoooOOhhh factor, this surely shouldn’t be the case.

And I’m sure a bunch use PCs too. Like I said, it’s all user preference on what you like better. Give both a try and see what fits your needs best.

what happened to my proof? on both the macs being more secure and the obvious hack on safari?

D:

That was more aimed at fiesta of fire and lutz

EDIT: Even your article says the exploit was done via safari and if you use safari you’re pretty much a lost cause anyways.

missed the other part.

The only reason besides looks and portability that an EECS/CS major would get a Mac is because it’s Unix-based and has a better terminal. However, for a much cheaper price, you can get Linux, which is also Unix-based. Compatibility for Mac and Linux are pretty similar, since they both suck at it, so if you wanted to go for compatibility then you should have gone for Windows anyway.

So explain to me - if “ooh ahh” isn’t the factor in choosing Mac over PC for an EECS/CS major, what is?

Short and simple: If you really don’t want to spend a little extra time customizing your PC, then go for a Mac. Otherwise, go for a PC, which saves quite a bit of money, at the cost of convenience. Windows is much more compatible with a lot of things, so if you really know what to do and how to customize it, then you’ll be getting much more out of your computer with a PC.

I’m not dismissing “ooh ahh” and portability as a bad reason to get a PC - in fact, it’s one of my main problems with my laptop PC right now. I’m simply analyzing the utility concern.

is it true that there will be no “free itouch with the purchase of a macbook for incoming college students” promo this year? as far as i know, there’s only an education discount…i know last year the promo started in july but does anyone know any more news/insight on this? i’m debating whether i should buy a macbook now or wait it out for any possible promos…help!

they have it every year pretty much. wait for promos

i believe the last time i asked, someone said they usually do it late summer, as in august, but i’m not 100% on that.

i got mine in june

i got mine in july during calso and got a free ipod then

ummm, back to the cost factor. The people mentioned above are rich, so they don’t have to think twice about buying the most expensive computer on the market.
