I will be a freshman this coming fall at Emory's branch campus, Oxford, and would like to know how necessary it is to bring a laptop to campus. Do ppl use their computers a lot? I will be taking liberal arts classes for the first two years so I don't know how often I will be writing papers and using the computer. Other thing, is I don't know if Oxford campus has a lot of computers and if they have a wireless network connection? Could someone give me some insight on these questions...any help appreciated. By the way, I am coming pretty far - all the way from Jersey(laugh if u want) so it would probably be better if I had a laptop?

laptop is more portable and generally cheaper. unless you need extras like high powered graphics cards for gaming or other high powered programs, a laptop is cheaper, smaller and better for a college campus than a desktop computer. and it is always more convenient to have your own .

I have had a desktop at emory for the past 3 years... There are only a few times I wish I had bought a laptop. Laptops are less stable, are rarely seen in classes, easier to steal/lose, easier to break. However, campus has lots of wifi spots so you can connect to the internet just about anywhere. Also you have to remember there are computers scattered all over campus so there isn't a time when you are more then 50 yards from a computer. Also Laptops are more EXPENSIVE than desktops. With all this said probably 85-90 percent of the student population has laptops. I guess I am a little strange.

What about the branch campus...do a lot of kids brings laptops with them their freshman yr? Whats the most common laptop used @ Emory? Dell, HP, Sony...?

Unless it will be a great financial hardship, I say get one. I am constantly on my computer throughout the day.

A majority of my friends have Apples. Of course, theres also a huge bunch of Windows uses.

Once you go Mac, you never go back...
