I guess students have to drag their laptops to the campus it dudes to get access on the network. Other universities don't require this, but whatever.

Is there a limit to this? What about other wifi devices like ipod touch, internet voip phone? Can parental units get laptops on the ucsd network too?

I have at least 5 devices registered (parents’, friends that have come and stayed, my ipod touch, my brother’s ipod touch… etc) and as far as I know there’s no limit.

You just need to be connected to the UCSD network to register. No need to go to ACS to do it. Just makes sure you register both your wireless and wired (ethernet) connections so you can use both.

Q: Can I set up my own wireless router in the residence halls?
A: Yes, if you first bring the wireless router to our office so we can configure it for you.

This is for a router, not a standard connection.

If it is true that we can register our own devices, then we can do the router ourselves too. When you’re behind the router, ucsd’s net sees the router’s mac address.

Registration is fairly easy. When you try to browse, you get stuck on the registration page. It makes you take a test on basic antivirus practices, etc. Unfortunately, you have to take the test for each device.

One caveat: There’s a page where it asks you for your network id and password (that you chose in a previous page). There’s a submit button right under it. However, there are required fields that are not visible that you have to scroll down to see. Probably should put the submit button on the bottom of the page, imo.
