So I totally want to get a new laptop for Emory, but I can't convince my parents. So I started looking online to see if maybe my laptop doesn't meet Emory's laptop requirements, but I don't see them anywhere. I have friends going to other schools finding them pretty easily. Does anyone know where I can find these laptop requirements?!

Goizueta’s is https://welcome.bus.emory.edu/program/MBAOrientation/Lists/Announcements/DispForm.aspx?ID=6. I got a Dell Latitude E6500 with a 250g hard drive, 4g ram, Intel Core 2 Duo P9600, 9-cell battery, a 1 terabyte external hard drive, and some other stuff for $2455. <a href=“Official Online Store”>Official Online Store; is the one Emory sells

So can you use a Macbook?

I’ve heard good things about the mac book pro, but it seems like Emory prefers Dell. I could be totally wrong though

emory has laptop requirements? since when?

oh and stevenseagal, im getting a dell e6500 with similar specs as a graduation present =D. how is it?

Not sure, getting it tomorrow in the mail (I hope), I’ll let ya know how it goes. I’m pretty optimistic about it because I’ve heard a lot of great things about the latitude series.

Ah, well there’s been a lot of hating on Dell computers/laptops in general so…I hope it works well.

Can’t be worse than a mac lol (I bet you know where my allegiance lies :p)

so if i don’t plan on going on to goizueta…? i guess there aren’t any other laptop requirements for emory? dang it. :P

Lie and say that those are the reqs:p

haha good thinking.
i noticed you’re discussing dell vs mac. i prefer dell, but i’ve never owned a mac? so i know it’s hard with converting files to non-macs or something. i’m really not pc oriented, but whats pros and cons of each?

They’re both good, what it really comes down to is which one you have the most experience with. I’ve used dell as long as I can remember, so I am more familiar with their key commands than I am with apple’s. Also, I hate macs because Steve Jobs looks so dumb; it’s like he’s dressing so he can be as sleek as his products. And I HATE mac mice. Also, I don’t really like the white color because I think it looks cheap. I like dell a lot because it treats its customers as professionals and adults as opposed to apple who assumes all teens are hipsters.

So, no requirements?? I will be getting a HP laptop then xD

i am mac. basically cause it never crashes like my old pc did and has really nice quality video/picture

hm steven seagal, i like how your explanation doesn’t really discuss the pros and cons of the actual computer.
i have a dell laptop now, and it’s really crappy, guess cuz it’s old. but i hate how it doesn’t shut all the way, the battery is dead, and it’s crashed a billion times (guess that’s more my fault). i just heard that for macs, it’s hard to convert files to other computers, since they use different file types? Is that true?

Well like I said, they’re both good and it comes down to preference. I don’t really see the point in discussing the pros and cons because that depends on the laptop itself, not the company.

You’ll have no problem with file types, Mac has word as well.

While the OS is better, the hardware is notoriously overpriced.

Mac OS is better than what? Window XP? Window Vista? Windows 7? Linux?
Better in what way?
It never catches virus? Do you know why? Because it simply isn’t profitable for malware makers to make virus for an OS that only shares ~5% of the OS market. Also, if you are a savvy computer user, it is quite hard to get a virus. The only time I get viruses is when I torrent and open .exe files without scanning. Simply too lazy to scan it. If you really want a OS that is immune to viruses, try Linux.

Now that we got that out of the way, What else? The fact that you have to use bootcamp to run every other game? The new Mac OS does have a nice feature that allows you to open Window applications inside Mac thought, not sure how it works though. I’m also going to bet it uses a lot of system resources.

Mac has a better UI/more user friendly? That’s a personal opinion.

Mac has good customer service/good build quality? True. But also consider this: MS doesn’t build computers nor do they service them. There are many other companies that have customer service and build quality that is just as good if not better than Macs. Example: Lenovo, Dell (surprise!- they sure changed a lot over the last few years)- I’m not a Dell fan, but it is what it is.

Also to the people who think vista is bad, think again. MS done some major patching with Vista. Vista is like XP when it just same out: It used to sucked, but now everyone loves it (referring to xp). Windows 7 currently is only a very slight improvement over Vista (not final release, RC1). FYI, every windows user (even some mac users) is craving for Windows 7 for those of you that don’t know.

Lastly, Dell Latitude E6500 is a very nice Dell Business model laptop. As far as I know, it’s comparable to the Lenovo Thinkpad T500, I prefer the Thinkpad though for the hybrid graphics, slightly better battery life, etc. But Dell has Esata, and something else I forgot.

What kind of files do you need to convert?

@StevenSeagal
$2455 is quite expensive for a Dell E6500…what all did you get?

it wasn’t really specifically about what kind of files i was hoping to convert, but b/c i have friends with macs who say it’s annoying to have to convert files from mac to dell b/c of different defaults? not really sure, since i’m not too computer savvy… wish i were more so… so i could understand what everyone was talking about :P

There are a lot of games and other sw that is PC only. But, the standard Office sw (Word, Excel, Powerpoint) is the same, as is Adobe. Even Mac’s Entrouge is made by Microsoft to be Outlook-like (standard PC e-mail interface).

Agree with the others in that Vista is really slow, and XP is faster. The good news is that MS will have Windows 7 (or whatever its new name) out in the late fall. So those opting for a PC can upgrade later.
