laptop use in classes

do most UCLA classes require you to take a laptop?
or do you take notes the good ol way, you know, writing them? :]

im debating whether i should buy an extra battery for my mac or not... ;]
so...
can you tell me how much you use your laptop in classes a day?
cuz if its not required..im def not buying a $150 battery!

you can take notes however you want.

My brother doesn’t have a laptop. He does ok.

you can use laptop or just with pencil and paper… depends on the class too, like science classes will be hard to take notes with laptop… also why would you need an extra battery? doesn’t macs last at least 2 or 3 hours? (most classes are that long)

I bring my laptop to class almost everyday. For me, I find that I take better notes because I type much faster than I write. Most of my classes are humanities classes. However, I have a tendency to check my email while my professor’s lecturing ;).

It’s up to your preference. My wrist gets strained easily, and I find typing pretty convenient. You can survive without bringing a laptop though, if you don’t want to drag around a heavy laptop.

awesome! thanksssssss ;]
haha and yea mac batteries last for…3 hours…which is a little but ehh
thanks for the help once again. ;]

Yeah, I’m gonna be an engineer (CS major to be exact) and I thought about this too. I decided that I would have a hard time taking notes for classes like math. Humanities and CS should be fine, though–you’re typing words and code, two things that a computer can store with ease.

Do many people record lectures using their laptops, phones, or music players?

yeah you’ll need a good battery for CS classes (i had 2 programming classes last quarter so i needed my battery to last 4 hours) but i rarely see people using laptop in other engineering classes (kinda weird to see anyone use unless tablet pc) and i rarely see people recording lectures, i guess you won’t really go back to listen to them again :D

theres a handful of people that record lectures, not a lot.

i would never listen to them again because that just takes too long, so i dont record.

Unless you master Latex, you could take math/physics/engineering notes =)
But otherwise, it’s unnecessary and also too distracting.

I recommend Lenovo laptops. I just got a Thinkpad SL400 and love the keyboard, screen, and build quality. I’ve had two Toshiba laptops in 4 years, and I felt their poor technical support + cheap LCD screen that stopped working after frequent handling rules it out as a candidate for bringing to class. I’ve also heard plenty of good things from Dell and Sony, so pick the best value for your needs. Good luck.

for a few classes, they have podcasts. google bruincast

UCLA has a computer store right? Should we wait and buy a laptop from there or get one from elsewhere?

for a mac, wait. PC, i think you can easily find better deals elsewhere.

recommend Lenovo IBM tablet series, very light around 3 pounds and with 8 cells battery the computer last up to 6 - 7 hours. I use a thinkpad tablet currently and enjoyed writing math notes with a digital pen on my tablet =)
