Laptop Use: Is it too conspicuous?

I am planning on using a laptop constantly at college, and I was just wondering if it looks conspicuous or strange that someone just pulls out a laptop to take notes with in class (I say this because I cannot write nearly as fast as I can type - typing will allow me to keep up with the professor's lecture). What do you guys think about recording lectures too?

Thanks! :D

Lots of people type their notes.

out of all of my classes in college (i've graduated).. one person used a laptop in bus495, and one person used a laptop in ifs440 (on occasion). half the class used them in ifs260. that's it. i never saw a laptop in any of my other courses.

I went to probably one of the tiniest schools in Massachusetts, and at least five or six people would use laptops during the large lectures and even a couple in the smaller classes. I did, for a while. No one really thinks about what you're doing (most people that go to class pay attention to the teacher). The only place it might look weird is in a math class.

Besides - if your school has wireless Internet, A.I.M. works great to distract you from actually learning anything ;).

Do most people bring smaller laptops? ie 10-12 inch screens? or do people bring larger ones?

bigger ones.

Mine's a 13.3 inch, but I'm bringing an extra monitor.
I really plan on bringing my laptop to class and carrying it around campus.

I think that I saw at least a few laptops in most of my classes, but most people gave up trying to take notes on their computer in the science classes (I haven't taken a math class yet, but I'd assume that very few people use them there as well). In most of the sciences, chemistry in particular, there're so many symbols that aren't on the keyboard that it's inefficient to try and type notes.
