Laptop Users

Do students often bring their laptop to class? I'm looking at a laptop now for the fall and I was wondering how much of a consideration should I give if the laptop is heavy.

For classes I have taken, its usually around 15-20 laptop users playing games, surfing the internet, or talking on AIM. For example, my psych class of ~120 had about 15 laptop users (sometimes more).

The heavier laptop batteries usually dont last as long, and I'm not sure if they have places to plug them in, in class, but either way I doubt you want to lug around a heavy laptop. Here is one I found that I think is reasonable and has a 6 hour battery life or close to 10 hours if you swap out the optical drive for the modular battery. Not to mention that thing is extremely light and portable at less then 2.7 lbs.

Do most professors mind if you bring a laptop to class (as a first year student)?

For the classes I have taken in which people have used their laptops, the professor didn't care (or never mention any problem with it).
