which is more convenient at Cornell... a laptop or a desktop?

what are the pros and cons?

Good question! I was wondering the same thing. Current students, help us out.. I have to start bugging my parents early on...

Mostly everyone has a laptop, but I don't really haul mine around that much. Some kids find them very helpful to type papers in the library and stuff. My roomate has a desktop which is fine. I think it's nice to be able to take it off my desk when I want to have more room.

are laptops less reliable?

I started with a laptop... it's much more convenient in terms of mobility. However, I also got a desktop. And I like desktops much more in terms of power/speed/options. If you can't get both, I recommend a laptop. There is a large wireless network around campus, and you can bring it where you need.

do students bring their laptops to class and take notes? or do they use the regular pen&paper ?

Does anyone have both?

I would recommend a laptop because it is so much more convenient. I originally got a desktop, but now I wish I had a laptop. All the libraries and many buildings have wireless internet access, which is great. Some libraries loan out laptops during the day, but they can only be used in the libraries, and are very popular so you may have to wait to take one out. I would say, without a doubt, go with a laptop!

yeah, do people actually take notes with laptops? or with pen and papers?

Majority of people take notes with pen and paper, but I do see a few people using laptops in class to take notes. My B-law class even allowed students to use laptops on exams...but this is more the exception than the rule for tests.

I'm planning on bringing both. Is that a practical idea?

how big are the dorms? how much stuff can we bring ? tv?
