I'm considering buying a Macbook now, because I am in fairly dire need of a laptop at the moment. However, I heard rumors that if we buy though Dartmouth, we'll not only get it cheaper, but they'll install whatever necessary software on it.

All of it is true. If you can manage waiting, you'll be happier in the long run. It will be cheaper, Dartmouth installs everything for you, and will fix your computer when something happens. In addition, it is rumored/very likely that a new macbook and macbook pro will be coming out this june. If you are really desperate, buy some cheap refurbished dell or something, and then re-sell it in September.

There is an educational discount, but I don't know what it is. They also presetup software (MS Office 08, other stuff) for you and give you some essentials (e.x. a Kensington laptop key lock, mousepad). They also support machines purchased through them more fully.

my father just bought me a macbook pro for getting accepted to dartmouth...but man i wish he would have waited. it would have been cheaper and i could have got the newest version.

Do you think that Dartmouth will begin shipping the Montevina models when they are released or continue to sell the early-2008 models? I believe you can start ordering on June 1, which is before the Montevina platform is released and Apple can incorporate it.
