So I understand Wake gives students laptops, but is anyone bringing their own anyway? or maybe a desktop?
I've never had a laptop before (no use for one) so my parents offered to buy one for college. I know I can get by with the laptop they give me but I really want a Mac instead. Would it make any sense, or does anyone do it, to buy a mac laptop or desktop to have in addition to the Wake laptop?

I work for IS and I know a couple of people that have bought Macs for various reasons - some because they're just "Mac snobs," and some who find it more useful to do their work (one of my friends who works for the newspaper bought one because she needs it for the design software).

To me, it doesn't make much sense, because IS gives you a computer that pretty much does everything you'd need it to - it comes with Photoshop as well as about any academic program you can imagine - but if you want to do it, it's really up to you. However, should anything go wrong with the Mac, IS won't really be able to help you fix it. If you're still thinking about it, I'd go the laptop route - freshman rooms aren't too large.

Yeah, don't bring a desktop. You'll never be able to use your desk for anything else.

I know a few people who have other laptops, but not many.

what kind of laptop does Wake give you?

The exact model usually changes from year to year, but it's an IBM Thinkpad.

WFU | IS| Thinkpad Information is the webpage for the computers that were given out to this year's freshmen and juniors. I was a junior last year, and they gave us the T60 (though I liked my R51 that they gave me Freshman year better). I'm not sure what next year's computer will be (Juba might better be able to answer that), but this website will give you a little bit of information.

My son insisted on dragging a desk top to school his freshman year---it came home the first break. There really isn't room for one (at least in his dorm). Though we had always been a Mac family--the thinkpad from Wake did fine and they will service those.
