Laptops Apple vs Microsoft

I’m going to The Lawrenceville School next year as a 9th grader and I wanted to know if I should get a Macbook or Microsoft Laptop. Any recommendations would be helpful.

I’d suggest a Mac for the sake of simplicity. If you’re coming here to ask us, I gather that you’re not particularly tech-savvy, and (Microsoft) Windows can be complicated in some aspects. In addition, Macs give you access to features like iMessage and AirPlay (mirroring screen to Apple TV), which can be helpful to schools. Lastly, I’m virtually certain that most kids will be using Macs, and it’s usually good to fit in  .
In terms of computer type, I would recommend the 11-inch MacBook Air or the 12-inch MacBook, assuming you are not a serious gamer. However, a Microsoft Surface is also a good choice if you don’t feel like spending $1000+, or like the half-computer, half-tablet feel.
Hope this helps!

a Dell laptop can be under $300. Computer depreciates fast. Safe the money and have a new one 4 or 5 years later.

MacBook all the way! I’m a Mac and my husband is a Pc. He always has trouble and I have NONE!! We did a MacBook Air for the kiddo.

If you are going with apple, you may want to wait untill July before purchasing. Apple may be updating the MacBook pro 13 inch in June which may be announced at the 2018 WWDC. https://www.cnet.com/wwdc/

Also Apple usually has a back to school offer every mid July. Free wireless Beats headphones were offered last year.

You may want to contact your school and ask if they have a preference (and support for both).

I have a Dell XPS, and I absolutely love it. In my opinion, if you get a Mac, you’re paying for the brand. Both are great computers, though, and I found that Mac vs PC was about 50/50 at boarding school (and in college too).

I do technology in education for a living and I’m of the mindset that you should wait until you know for sure what is prevalent at your school. I always find it funny that many schools (my BS DD as well as other DD day school) use Macs when the lion’s share of technology you will find in college classrooms and computer labs are PC-based (of course excluding design programs or colleges). My son (not at BS) has a really nice 2-in-1 (touchscreen, yet full system) Dell Inspiron that I have also recommended to colleagues and they love it as well. That being said, when in Rome…

I use a 2017 Razer Blade 12.5" and I’m in love with it. It’s graphics are excellent and perfect for video and photo editing. I know it’s from a gaming company, but it doesn’t have the graphics card for gaming (If that’s what parents are concerned about at BS). It’s incredibly light and I love the touchscreen on it. Perfect for carrying around and if you know your way around Windows, it can be your dream laptop. However, as @MAandMEmom said… when in Rome…

just bought my daughter a new MacBookPro for high school. bought her sisters’ one when they started and 4 years later, they are still going strong. The MBP’s tend to be longer lasting, as they have slightly better specs.
