After searching the UVa website and only finding “All laptops have been awarded for the 2008-2009 year.”, I turn to CC.

What type of Dell laptop would I receive?

Is it first come, first served or by lowest EFC?

When would I be notified of receiving the laptop?

When would I be given the laptop?

Is the laptop mine to keep forever or do I give it back when I graduate?

Am I allowed to personally upgrade the laptop, e.g. additional RAM, change OS?

What happens if this laptop is damaged or stolen?

What accessories does this laptop come with?

Thanks in advance to anyone that can answer my question(s).

Just hit one of the “comments” links and ask.

Wait…according to the “boring” thread, you’re already a student? There are AccessUVa coordinators all over the University who could probably answer your question.

You can basically have any computer you want – as long as you have word processing and internet capabilities, you’ll be fine in almost all cases. UVa does offer computers to be purchased directly from the school, see [CAV Student Computer Programs | CAV - Cavalier Computers](http://www.uvastudentcomputers.com/) . You don’t have to buy from the school though.

There is a thread in which current engineering students have discussed computer options. While some are told they must have a PC, others have been able to use Macs without trouble.

Obviously, I defer to the department on the recommendations, but be sure to search for the thread specifically about computers and engineers.
