How common is it to see people using a laptop or some other computer aided note taking device in class?

Do the professors at your college tend to frown upon people using them while class is in session?

It depends. If it is a small class, then probably not, especially if you have no reason to have a laptop. Even in larger classes, they are uncommon. The only time I have brought a laptop to class is during large lectures of computer programming classes (I'm EE).

I mean I guess it kinda looks bad, some people might be legitimately taking notes, but most of the time, they are just browsing facebook.

It depends on what your class is doing. If it's a class where you are writing, a lot of people will bring them. I had a prof last fall (Ed Foundations class) who encouraged us to bring them to class. She even had us look stuff up on the internet sometimes, often in groups.

If you're talking about taking notes in, say, a history class, it probably depends on the professor. I find I get the gist of my stuff better if I hand-write the notes and will swap the laptop for a legal pad and some pencils no matter who is teaching or how fast he is talking.

If it's one of those convocation things that is forced by some freshman classes, BRING THE LAPTOP. Chances are that talk will mean nothing to you in the long run and you'd be better off playing Blackjack during it like I did.

Its been over 4 years

Pretty much every class I have at least 3-5 people have a laptop open, that increases as the class size gets bigger. Professors are usually cool with it, but one professor I had made everyone with a laptop sit in the front row or they can’t use it. One guy didn’t move and he kicked him out of class lol
