Is it commonplace for students in freshman classes to use their laptops to take notes and what not?

Not really. Some people like to do that, most people don't. I never brought my laptop to class unless specifically instructed to do so. Unless the teacher is absolutely blazing, then I don't see a problem with freehand notes.

i didn't take notes on the computer last semester, but this semester i am and i find that i get a lot more of what the professor says down in my notes. i've noticed more and more people bringing their laptops to classes, especially in com. i'd say its about 50/50

Do the classes have a place to plug in your charger? My laptop doesn't have much of a battery life.

Yes, most classes on the BU campus are equipped with electrical outlets for laptops and such.

i thought i was going to use my laptop in class, but for small classes it really is impractical so i only use it for large lectures

The college students I know don't use their laptops for note taking, just playing games. I know this because we play an online game together. xD

separate question but somewhat related ---

does anyone know if it is possible to fit a desktop computer (with an lcd monitor, wireless keyboard and wireless mouse) on a Warren/West Campus dorm room desk?

Student Union - Backdoor at BU

Maybe you should look at the pictures and judge for yourself? I think it'd be a little crampt if you brought a desktop and it'd probably take up all the room on your desk.

Yes you can but it will take up most of the room on a standard desk if you don't put the cpu under the desk.
