Laptops in class

Do people actually lug their laptops to class? On here I see people posting how they're going to be carrying this and that and plus a laptop in their bag.

This past semester I hardly ever saw anyone bring a laptop to class and neither did I. I didn't see the point. I've talked to people at other schools and they are the same way.

What is the deal?

I think it depends on the person and the class. I know in some of the lectures I went to last year, about half the class brought laptops to take notes, while a few others were taking notes by hand. In discussions we weren’t allowed to bring them.

I brought a laptop to all of my classes, and for some it was required (my Matlab class, obviously). I don’t think it’s weird at all, but I’m sure it was the cause of a lot of my/others’ slacking off when the class wasn’t as interesting.

Just don’t bring your laptop to this guy’s class:

I don’t bring mine to class anymore unless I’m actually going to use it for class work. Most of the time I found myself on facebook or CC haha

I know this was done with a junk computer (says so in the article). But can you imagine the fallout if a prof really did that to a students computer. That might be one after class argument worth sticking around to hear.

I think for math its useful if you use Matlab but as an econ/poli sci student, i will be bringing it to all my classes to take notes since i can access most professors ppts online as they speak and write notes in the bottom of slides

i guess its not as effective for science classes…does anyone use laptops for notes in world languages classes?

I do, but it is not convenient. I only do it because I have dysgraphia and it is the only way I can take my own notes, it’s a huge pain for languages because of the special characters. For science it’s not a big deal but I guess it depends on the class, I used mine for geology and biology and it was just as convenient as it would have been for any other class.

I got the impression from a thread in the parents forum about this that it really depends on the school, as well as the class and the student. At my school most people bring laptops, at least to the classes I have taken-- I am a poli sci major taking mostly humanities and social science classes.

static classes that are based off of powerpoints and stuff lend themselves VERY well to onenote. discussion classes are also compatable. regardless, it depends absolutely on the class.

the thing i liked about the notes i took on my computer is that i can search them for reviews and homework. its very organized.

One guy I knew always brought his laptop to every class and he was on it constantly. Except he wasn’t taking notes- or even paying attention. He was always watching youtube, playing bad music, or chatting on facebook. Sadly there were many times he didn’t even bother to turn the volume down.

For classes that were an hour or less, I never bothered to bring my laptop with me, no matter how boring or unnecessary the lectures were. For my classes that were more than an hour, I’d bring my laptop around the half time and usually check my email, take notes and just mess around on sporcle.

I brought my laptop to 1 of my classes each semester: Sociology in the first semester because my professor talked so fast that I only got about 1/4 of the information when I hand wrote notes and history in the second semester because I hadn’t in the first semester and regretted it (I had the same prof).

I don’t take it unless we need to do course evaluations. I like taking notes by hand. People never take them to hsty classes, and almost never take them to posc classes. I don’t like bringing mine unless I have to because I don’t want to drop it.
