Is it common for students to take notes on their laptops during class? Also, do a lot of professors not let you use a laptop to take notes?

I am also interested. Also is there a laptop theft at UCB?

It depends on the professor. Some allow them, some don’t.

There is laptop theft. But it’s pretty easy to avoid…just don’t leave your belongings alone (duh). Many students use their laptops to take notes, although it seems that it’s very easy to wind up on Facebook when lectures get boring. Most professors will let you use them, but there are some that don’t.

Do most students use Mac or PC laptops?

Mac! I use a pc and I stick out like a sore thumb!

in big lectures, it is very common for students to take notes on laptops unless the professor says not to. But in small classes or sections, it is seen as a sign of disrespect.

@borntogrow

lol

borntogrow, I will be joining you next year, PCs for life.

Once you buy a mac, you’ll have mutual feelings. Trust me. Lol I like both now but I have to say…mac is much better. It’s popular for a reason. A good reason : ]

Yes, there are laptop theft in Cal. Mine (and my roommate’s) laptop was stolen from our room 5AM in the morning. Also, there are cases of laptop theft in the library. So buy a lock and use it (as I learn the hard way).

And yes, you see a lot of laptops in class.

Using the laptop to take notes is not convenient. However, some professors provide powerpoint slides before lecture, which is why many students use laptops: to read the slides as he/she rambles. Else, it may prove to be more of a hassle/risk/distraction. Best to stick with good ol’ paper and pencil as it helps some to solidify ideas in their head. Good luck!

leave it at the dorm unless you want to end up on facebook 5 minutes into lecture
