How are you guys planning to get laptops for sept 06? does columbia offer any deals? any recomendations from past students?

Columbia isn't going to give you any deals that are worthwhile, and I'm not even aware of any at all.

Get whatever laptop you want/need/can afford. If you're into video games, get something powerful. If you hate computers, get the a no-frills computer.

Columbia has it's own apple website dealio. You can get the apple education discount from there.

I got a Dell. They also have educational discounts for Dell comptuers.

all dell or just selected few? I'm costomizing my laptop for next year from dell's site ... it'd rock if I can get a good deal for the one I want =p

They limit the amount of customization you can do, but it's worth a look.

when can we get the discounts? after we get to columbia?

any links to the dell offers?

You need to call:

Note: Entering students who do not have an active UNI should call Dell at 1-800-695-8133 and give Columbia's Dell Member ID: US24184416.

http://www.columbia.edu/acis/sales/

when do we get our UNI's?

When we get our emails (email ID = UNIs). I think that's July.

How are the Dells for after-sales service?

all the deals are pretty laughable, the dells especially tho (cheapest laptop is like 1400 for them because you have to buy basically pre-made ones tho you can change a few things like HD size and ram)

why no ibm/lenovo deals, bah.

Apples rock my world. If you can afford it, don't care about gaming, and are a low maintenance computer user (as in word processing, internet, music, and photos) then those powerbooks are really convenient. Everybody I know that owns one loves it. I've never gotten a virus, my computer has never crashed with five pages of a six page paper written on it...etc. I've used PCs my whole life but when I switched to a powerbook for college...I don't know if I could go back. It's easy, it always listens to me, and after many stressful PC viruses that I've dealt with in my short lifespan, my computer is like a dream now.

yes! i LOVE my powerbook!

i'm probably gonna drop the 1.5k on a macbook and download boot camp and dual boot OSX and WP...now i just need to find 1.5k and i'm in business :)

note overheating problems with macbook/macbookpros.

isnt that a battery issue? i saw a recall on mac batteries for overheating and they said they'd replace

Wait, what overheating issue?
