Are you guys all bringing laptops? If so, what kind are you bringing/considering? What size/weight/hard drive size is good? Do a lot of people carry laptops with them to class or will they only be used mostly in our dorm rooms?

From what others say, most people still use notebooks. I just bought a new laptop thru cal poly's program with dell. Scored a sweet deal, got a 2,000 computer for 1,400.

intel core 2 duo 2ghz
1gb ddr2 ram
ati x1400
100gb 5400 drive
dvd r/rw

not bad I might say.

www.dell.com/calpoly

i was thinking of a hp
but this is a real sweet deal

how did you get that for 1400?
I customized as you posted it up to 1600.
Tell me which one you chosed.

yea i just got an hp for 750... down from 900. i was thinking of not getting such a nice one just in case i might damage it or something. or i might want a nicer one in 4 years so no point in spending so much now.

err all i know is that it has a i 1 mb memory, 80 bg harddrive, dvd rw, is 15.4 inches diagonally and is 6.3 pounds.

I would reccommend a Dell, for you get a 12% discount (go to the corral bookstore site, then click on dell) for being a SLO student...and dell has alot of sales going on...i think they have a 35% off of inspiron notebooks going on right now.

notebookreview.com is also a great site to visit, look at the forums

I got a Dell XPS M1210...for cheap thanks to the student discount and a coupon I bought off of ebay =D...but I need the extra ram/hd space/graphics 4 my gaming needs ><

Its a dell e1505.

I used the dell website which can be found at the bookstore website... or www.dell.com/calpoly

eh...i'm not really good with computers and such...but what's the difference between a notebook and a laptop? i still need one for college and absolutely clueless on what to get!

Well on my post above, when I said most people still use notebooks. I did mean notebooks in their old fashioned meaning, aka paper and pen.

However, when people refer to the computer type notebooks, its just another way of naming the laptop.

As for cal poly, a laptop is not mandatory nor is it essential. CP boasts their quantity and quality of computers available on campus. However, a laptop is very convinient to have in the dorms. For the most part, in an educational sense, most laptops on sale right now will do the job. Get a good deal. I got a really powerful laptop because I have other plans for it that are not educational like playing video games, watching movies, etc...

I purchased this Late May/Early June. I would highly recommend Dell. They are very fast to build your system and their customer service is great.
