laptops

does anyone know how much battery life would be good for a laptop? i'm going to study outside my dorm occasionally. also, are laptops used for taking notes in class?

Not very many people use their laptops in class. I would've gotten a PC except I live out-of-state so it's easier to transport a laptop back and forth for breaks, especially since I wouldn't really feel comfortable leaving a computer sitting in my dorm room all of winter break.
As far as battery life, most places on campus will have some place to plug your computer in, unless you're planning on studying outside a lot.

For the Dell Latitude D620A (one of the recommended laptops by the Emory bookstore), the 6-cell battery is quite sufficient. You should be able to get about 3-4 hours usage on a single full charge. The problem with the larger 9-cell battery is that it adds a little extra weight, and because of the battery positioninig, the 9-cell battery apparently creates a lip of about .9 inch on the front of the laptop. You can get a full charge on a 6-cell battery in abut 1 hour.

have you gotten your laptop from Emory's bookstore? we are waiting on one here

Fanmom,

We received my daughter's laptop last Friday morning via UPS/Fedex (one of those). I haven't put all of the software on there yet but checked it out a bit, and it appears to be OK and working.
