Laptops

hey guys........just wanted to know what are the prices of laptops in LA......i mean the good ones........which company laptops are generally preferred and what is the price range.........also, is it better to buy it online or from some store........

Regards,
Parag

i believe i can help in that department.

laptops can be extremely affordable as well as over-extravagant.

lower end machines (those without real good GPUs or other add-ons) can be as little as $600 dollars. High-end machines (gaming, video editing, etc.) can run as much as $1500 and up, which for a lot of people is just too much.

in the US, Dells are popular because the price is right. While they may nto be the best machines in the world, they certainly work.

if you dont need a powerful machine, i recommend laptops with a Pentium M or AMD Turion processor. they are plenty powerful for everyday tasks, and now they are cheap because the newer generation of dual core processors are out.

if you want more power, i recommend a laptop with Intel Core Duo processor. if you get a slightly slower chip, they are not too expensive and you probably wont feel the difference between say 1.6 ghz and 2.1 ghz.

a pentium-M/turion laptop can be had for about $500 on sale. basic Core Duo laptops can be had for about $700-$800 on sale. of course if you add on the latest and greatest features, they can easily goo north of $1000. i would recommend getting at least 40gb hard drive and 512mb ram for a budget laptop and 60gb hard drive, 1gb ram for an average laptop.

Did UCLA update their computer requirements yet? could someone post a link? I remember seeing the requirements a year ago, but don't remember where.

Thanks!

their requirements are baloney. as long as it does what you need it to do, its fine. preferably, it should be running Win XP SP2 or Mac OSX, but even that is not a strict requirement.

thanks for the info!

If you're a CS major, I recommend you pack as much RAM as possible.

Depending on the avaliability of coupons from Dell, you can get a E1405, with a 14.1" glossy WXGA+ widescreen, 1.6Ghz Core Duo T2050, with 1GB RAM, 80GB hard drive, and 802.11g Wi-Fi for about $700 with a $300 off $999 Dell coupon (search on google for these). There are some 35% off coupons that Dell sends out to current customers, which could lower your price to $650. These 35% off coupons are available on eBay, and can be had for only $1 with instant e-mail sending of your coupon code. $1 investment for $50 savings is worth it, IMHO.

(BTW, savings assume you purchase a Dell E1405 with upgrades that bring the total to $1003.)

Sometimes Dell has EPP coupons. I highly recommend that you wait for these coupons to come out, because they will stack onto the already 2%-12% off that you will be getting. I hear that there may be a sale coming around Labor Day. So if you guys can wait it's very much worth it. Oh and for UCLA students, the Dell link for students can be found after logging into the computer section of the bearwear page.

i purchased a dell laptop last year using a $300 off coupon, however, there are many others (a $750 off comes now and then). Check out www.edealinfo.com for these coupons.
