are they REALLy necessary for a math major? i'm a slow typer. like 25 WPM lol

You do need a computer, but it doesn’t have to be a laptop.

they’re not REALLY necessarily
just have a computer in ur dorm or something

These days a computer is pretty much necessary to use. You should learn to type, written papers are becoming extinct. Perhaps you should try to buy a typing program to improve your speed or take a class? It’s a very useful skill.

Btw, you are posting a lot of random threads today, aren’t you?

Even as a math major you will have to work with computers: calculus classes might use computer software packages instead of a graphing calculator (e.g. mathematica), some higher-level math classes require papers, I took one class where the professor insisted on us typing our weekly problem sets, and you will have to take classes outside of your major, at least some of which will involve papers. And you might have to write a thesis at some point.

And then there are always non-major specific things you will need a computer for: checking e-mails, Facebook, College Confidential
and Blackboard. Most of my math and non-math professors post homework assignments on Blackboard, and some professors also use it to give us readings etc. And you can use / will need a computer for entertainment: watching tv or downloading music or…

I agree with the above posters that some sort of computer in your dorm room is almost a necessity, but it doesn’t need to be a laptop. I have a laptop and while it never leaves my desk while school is in session, taking my laptop home or to friends during breaks is a lot easier than bringing a PC.

There’s a lot of good software out there that will help you improve your typing speed, also typing fast is useless if it’s not ACCURATE.

As for working with PCs yeah it’s important but you don’t have to be a whiz.
