Hi, I will be attending UF this upcoming fall and intend to pursue a major in Biochemistry through the Department of Chemistry. I was thinking about getting a Mac but was just wondering if it would be better for me to get the Mac or get a PC for what I will be doing. What do you guys think?

Go with the MAC, if that’s what you prefer. There is no class I can think of that would specifically require the use of a PC.

any other inputs?

I would personally consider PC, there are myriads of programs that are not compatible with Macintosh and Mac is more expensive, college is not made to waste money when really there are more economic and useful solutions.

A Mac is great, but as Lr2010 said there are many programs that are only PC compatiable, however, Mathematica, MatLab, MiniTab, Office, and many more science and math programs all have Mac versions. Mac’s are fast and not as at risk for viruses and spyware. That security comes with a price.

can’t you run Windows on a Mac in addition to Mac OS to where I would be able to run windows programs though?

Koolgecko91: It is a myth that Macs are not vulnerable to viruses and spyware. Granted, there are far more viruses written for Windows Operating Systems, but that is because there are more Windows based PC’s in use and it is the dominate type for business. There are Mac viruses circulating. Please don’t continue to perpetuate the “no viruses for Mac’s” myth. A side note: I would purchase an anti-virus program for a Mac if I had one. I have had a number of students have serious problems when their Mac became infected by a virus. Yes, it does happen.

proud_mom: I understand that they are not completely virus free but the amount of viruses with respect to a Mac is A LOT lower then with viruses. Safe browsing should always be practiced regardless of OS.

Skapunk5251: Yes, a Mac is easily dual booted. With the new processors and what not, dual booting should not slow down your computer very much.
