Large bug (wasps, bees, ect.) problem at UVA?

When I went on my tour a while ago, I remember there being large stinging bugs EVERYWHERE. I got chased by one on my tour, and even a friend of mine who was on another tour also got chased. Even if it was just because it was spring, I didn't have that issue at any other school. What's the deal with bugs?

I don’t know, but bee populations are way down. That trend is threatening the US agricultural system. Farmers are renting swarms of bees to pollinate their crops. Some types of pesticides are suspected.

^That would be zero explanation why one campus might have a lot of bees or wasps. Maybe a lot of flowering tress on campus or something. My youngest attends college in southern California and got stung by bees a couple of times this past year. There is an easy solution, attend college in Maine or some northern climate where the summer season is short and you won’t find many stinging insects during the school year. :)

I have never noticed large, stinging bugs that chasing people around and I’ve been here for about 10 years. :)

Two years ago, there was a yellow jacket nest above my window. Facilities had an exterminator here within a day or two. That’s all I’ve got.

There are always a good number of large bees by the amphitheater, other than that it depends on the plants near the doors.

Maybe you need to change your aftershave.

I think admissions officers from Virginia Tech cultivated a specially trained species and released them on Grounds to drive prospective students away from UVa.

This is a job for Cav Man B-)

A couple of years ago (2012), there were infestations in Kerchof Hall http://social.virginia.edu/huge-hive-creates-a-buzz-in-math-department/</a> and at the Law School http://social.virginia.edu/when-life-gives-you-bees-make-honey/</a>. But I don’t think they’re more common at UVA than in any other warm environment.

I never noticed anything out of the ordinary compared to other parts of VA. Springtime this year was very delayed due to snow, polar vortices, more snow, more polar vortices, and even more snow. It seemed like once it finally warmed up for good, spring exploded all at once and everything, even the bugs, were out in full force.

The one thing that I really remember about Cville my forth year was the stink bugs. Holy crap I’ve never experienced so many weird bugs slinking in. They’re kinda big, can fly sort of fast, but are super dumb bugs and will fly around loudly and hit everything in their path and their hard shells bounce off everything they hit, making an audible (weird) noise. Man I hate stink bugs. Thankfully, the crummy winter/spring/short changeover hampered the population for this year

Stink bugs are the MOST horrible creatures!
