@gonnastop, somunusc

ISB student here. You guys SAS, WAB or what?

@Mainer

“In addition, we heard that a standard part of the Chinese equivalent to our 8th grade was intensive training in taking the SSAT test. Yes, they’re all over it in China!”

That, to my knowledge, is a blatant lie. A extreme minority of Chinese kids take SSAT Training Courses. Boarding Schools may be becoming more popular in China, but definitely not to the extent where SSAT training is intergrated into Middle School curriculum.

Hey gonnastop!
I am an applicant from mainland china and I m just gonna say that there are teens who care about their futures, for instance, me! Ha ha. I have posted for like once or twice…

where are you from? and what schools did you apply to? I am getting really nervous now, as march 10th is approaching… And there is nobody around me that I can actually talk about these stuffs with… Cause for me (I don’t know if its your case…), applying to BS means giving up on Zhongkao… so if I don’t get into anywhere, then my life is gonna be totally screwed… :(

中国同胞这么多呀?

This is truly surprising.

Kli:

Ha ha… I didn’t realize this fact until I saw this thread. I guess this is another factor showing that there are a lot of chinese applying for BS this year. From what I’ve heard from my interviewer, mainland chinese students’ acceptance rate is around 5% at HADES. So it really is super competitive. Actually I am pretty glad to meet someone who is from China here. I have been reading all these threads domestic applicants posted, but the case for international students is really different…

But i gotta say, people here are really really nice… most friendly people I have ever met online. :)

wow…so many chinese applicants in this thread!!!

kli: I don’t go to an int’l school - I currently go to a boarding school in Canada =)

meda111: 5% acceptance rate?? wow that’s really low…Do you know if the low acceptance rate results from the fact that they are deliberately setting higher expectations for asian candidates??? (to control their quota for int’l students) , or is it because most asian candidates do not qualify for HADES standard (especially their english proficiency)?

没想到中国人这么多阿= =…

Rule #1: only English is allowed here!!!

Guys I’m pretty impressed… So many Chinese! Which grade are you in? And which grade are you applying for? Which schools?
Meda111: why do you give up zhongkao? To prepare for tests? No way! I don’t know your situation but ummm for me, my high school(will get in this September haha) is just as good as BS. It sends several kids to the Ivies each year and is renowned in the whole country.

I’m a 9th-grader from Nanjing Foreign Language School. I’ll apply for fall 2011(next year). I need aid.
That’s my basic info.

Somnusc: most of them DON’T QUALIFY. I’m not saying that test scores are everything, but I know a few kids who applied to the HADES with a 80 toefl/70% ssat. And there’s even a guy applying to choate(needs FA) with a 30 toefl!
Generally they don’t get the whole thing. They just let those zhongjies write essays for them. So I’d say that at least 50% of the applicants simply don’t qualify. As for the rest 50%, I assume only half of them had amazing interviews and are motivated.

No worries! DA’s int’l admission rate was 9% last year, while the int’l applicants made up 24% of the whole pool.
Everyone does stand a chance. Just do our very best!

somnusc: All these schools have this perfect ratio of the number of students of each race, to maintain their diversity, right? So as the applicant from mainland china increases, the acceptance rate decreases…

gannastop: lets just say that i am not as lucky as you guys. I attend a regular public school. So… yeah. Ninth grade is a really big deal here, cause the zhongkao at the end of the year practically determines a persons life… so as I wasn’t as focused as other kids (tests, apps, interviews…)… yeah, thats basically what is it all about… what about you guys? all from international schools besides somnusc?

NFLS is public. It’s like one of those foreign language schools that our beloved former prime minister established in the 1950s. It’s public. It’s cheap(almost free). It chooses 280 kids out of over 4000 each year for middle school. And yeah there’re people paying 10k or more (RMB) if they don’t have nice test scores. We’re public, free, competitive and amazing in every single way.

I won’t give up zhongkao in this case. But I can see that we’re different. You don’t need aid and are probably determined to go to a BS(and you will!!! Good luck!). For me, it’s more like a rehearsal for the college app. And the chances are too slim as I’m applying for aid.

Good luck again to everyone! You deserve it!

Meda
You do interviews and apps for zhongkao? How’s that possible?

gonnastop:

all you said abut NFLS reminds me of the old daysssssss…I did that stressful exam for NFLS and I got accepted to the French program, lol. And the 10K thing…You just made me nostalgic =(

If you are currently a freshman, are u applying to the 11th grade next year then? Also, are you planning to do interviews with alumni representatives or are u gonna fly all the way to New England??

Meda:

what schools r u applying to? Cheer up, only 9 days left!! I wish the best for everyone =)

hey y’all chinese peeps, check out the my international thread for all in’t kids, not just chinese? (trying to promote it, that’s all, some interesting stuff in the thread)

(no offence) did you pay the 10k or something? (NO offence)

Small world, indeed. really can’t believe I met NFLS people HERE!

I’m applying as a repeat sophomore, which makes me a 2014. Those schools come to China to interview people. I can do it as long as I RSVP early enough. (hopefully)

I’m just stressing out about the fact that I’m applying as a Chinese who needs a significant amount of aid. My friends were waitlisted and the school clearly stated that it was because they applied for aid. (sad) All the successful aid applicants from China all applied BEFORE 2008(that’s when Chinese applicants increased by 100% or 200%).
Anyone has some good news for me???

Good luck!

gonnastop:

I love how you emphasize “no offense” twice!! hahaha its kinda funny. But no, I got in by myself (with a pretty low mark though lol)…Sadly I only went to NFLS for like one week, then I went to Canada =(

As for FA, I think it really depends on the amount and what you can bring to the school community. I mean, if you are a brilliant candidate whom they consider to be future leaders, why wouldn’t they offer the opportunity for you to go? Obviously it would be harder for int’l students, but you’ve still got a decent chance (although the fact that you are applying to be a repeat sophomore may affect your chance a little)…I knew someone who got $30000+ FA at Choate.

P.S.: I’m applying as a repeat sophomore too =)

its kind of funny how no one is on CC right now cuz of time difference, hahaha…

wait aren’t you in Canada? It must be midnight(or early morning) there…???

There were 5 or 6 kids who went to BS with aid. I know every single one of them. But they’re just being too pessimistic. I can’t help thinking about this…(which distracts me a little bit from my zhongkao thingy lol I don’t really care about it THAT MUCH)

I need 25k+ FA if applying as a repeat sophomore(3 yrs of high school). How does that hurt your chances? I heard that neither BS nor college cares about it. A really good friend of mine repeated 3yrs @ a HADES school and got into Harvard.[they don’t care]

Which city are you from? A GREAT Olympic game!

I came back for Spring break…so 6:04 pm for me!!

Maybe I’m wrong about FA for repeat applicants - ask more ppl to be sure. Be really optimistic and emphasize your outstanding qualities and talents during your interviews, best wishes to you for next year =)

I live in Toronto lol

gonnastop:

Ha ha. Thats not what I meant… I guess I probably didn’t state it as clearly. My situation then at the beginning of this year was basically about choosing between zhongkao and BS. So I chose BS. And the applying process really did occupied a lot of my time so I can’t actually study for zhongkao. So now BS is all I can count on. 9 days to go!! Though you are just doing a rehearsal, wish the best for you!

somnusc:

Thank you! I actually feel cheered up reading what you wrote. And good luck to you too! :]

Thanks meda! But…you know…as you’re going through the app process and found out how amazing those schools are, you just can’t treat it like a rehearsal!

I’m feel so bad about it. My chances are like 0.0000001% and…aww it hurts! When you’ve spent countless hours writing essays, doing interviews, preparing for tests…then get rejection letters on Mar.10 ONLY because of AID! So sad!!!
I really need to talk to more people about this. I doubt whether it’s worth applying!

Thanks for all your wishes! Truly inspiring&sweet.

Wait. We’ve made a huge mistake here. It’s 100k, instead of 10k haha.
Expensive!!

Gosh how on earth can a Chinese family afford the tuition…sigh^^
