Large, Private Universities? WHERE?

I'm having a bit of a dillema as a high school junior. I love the idea of a large public school like Indiana, Wisconsin, Penn State, etc. However, financial aid (aka merit aid) is desperately needed by me and I only have MAYBE a 1300 on SAT (alot of publics base their aid on SATs over 1350). But I have awesome extra curriculars, awards, etc, and a solid (4.0) GPA.

So, privates are going to be the best. Besides Ivys and very uppity private schools, where is there over 10,000 students, fairly prestigious, and very into partying?

Thanks!!

Boston U, USC, NYU, Northwestern (8,000), Cornell, George Washington

your SAT score is low for all of these except for BU. Try and bump that up.

His SAT is fine George Washington too.

Try taking the ACT. I got a 2000 on the SAT (equivalent to a 1340 without writing), but scored a 33 on the ACT, with a perfect score in reading. It was a much more competitive score, and some people are naturally better at one test than the other.

Also, any Ivies (aka Cornell) won't give you merit aid - only need-based financial aid.

Yeah most of these...too prestigious. I don't want to be surrounded by dorks who study all the time and people who are super competitive.

How about Syracuse or American? Something equvialent. Respected, but not crazy.

you shouldnt be wary of a college because it is too prestigious...

syracuse is ok and american is good for international relations/studies/poli sci/public policy majors but not much else...like gw but not as good.

buffalo -

you'd be surprised that there are not as many dorks at prestigious schools as you may think. you'll find that the people who are at the best schools are extremely well rounded - sometimes i feel as if im the only one who didn't play a varisty sport in high school.

Yeah, I definitely worded that wrong. I didn't mean they are all dorks. I basically don't want to be surrounded by 10,000 kids who are all smarter than me if I managed to squeak in.

I want to go somewhere with excellent financial aid for someone with great GPA and course load, amazing ECs, and decent SATs. So...that makes it a not top top top private, but lower, still respectable, with lots of students (over 10,000) who like to party (aka Syrcause). Except I hate the area around Syracuse.

Any other suggestions that fit that description^^?

boston college, fordham, american, tulane -

there arn't that many big private schools - the ones that are large tend to be near the top.

yey cuse!!!

Look at Northeastern in Boston.

BC, Fordham, American, Tulane...

what else guys?

You could try NYU as a reach.

meh...I hate city schools. Not rural ones either.

Check out UMiami. Study over the summer and give the SATs another shot in the fall. What do you want to study?

buffalo - you want a private school - with over 10,000 people, thats not in a city nor is it rural. the only schools that fit that are bc and syracuse - the rest are in cities.

Ok, I haven't even gotten the 1300 yet and you guys are making it seem like the death of me. I'm a great student. Why should I be dismissed just because I got a 1250-1300 (still respectable!!)? This system is horrible.

oh, and you can scratch the not city or rural. NYU just makes me sick. TOO much of a city.

if you haven't taken the sat yet, then how come you are saying you got a 1300 on it???

lots of practice tests. and i didnt say I got a 1300. I'm shooting for a 1300.

"I only have MAYBE a 1300 on SAT"
